A Brief History of The Scholarship Program
Our Scholarship program began in 1921. At that time, at a District Meeting in Binghamton, Mrs. Carrie Brigden, President, and Mrs. Lewis Seymore, Vice-President of the New York State Federation of Home Bureaus, Inc., discussed the possibility of Home Bureau members contributing dimes at the Annual Meeting for a scholarship for a Home Economics Student. About 50% of the students of the College of Home Economics at Cornell were earning their way through college at this time. Mrs. Seymore contributed $10.00, which was deposited in the bank toward the first scholarship.
At the Annual Meeting in 1922, BroomeCounty contributed $10.00 and the program was started with member contributions. When Mrs. Brigden retired from the Presidency in 1923, it was decided to name the first scholarship in her honor. Nothing more was received until January 1926, when TiogaCounty added another $10.00. After that, more funds started coming in each year. In January 1928, the Carrie Brigden Scholarship was established at Cornell with $1500.00.
The amount desired for the Brigden Scholarship was $6000. This fund, as reported at the Federation meeting in November 1931, was oversubscribed. It was closed at $6000 and the over subscription was used to establish another Home Bureau Scholarship at Cornell, to be known as the Martha Van Rensselaer Home Bureau Scholarship. From that time on, endowments were set at $5000.
Over the years, our members have become more and more interested in our Scholarship Program. The members have raised money through different fundraisers, donations, memorials, and In Honor cards, thus making larger donations possible. Scholarships are made up of contributions given by all members all over the state.
Until 1952, all Home Bureau Scholarships were placed at CornellUniversity in the Home Economics Department. That year, the Frances K. Todd Scholarship was placed at OneontaCollege in their Home Economics Department. In 1960, for the first time, a Federation Scholarship was given to a student in a two-year college at the State University of Delhi. In 1962 the idea of Memorial Cards was implemented, and In Honor Of Cards came into being in the 1970s. Scholarships opened up to include male students. In 1971, a list of guidelines on choosing Federation Scholarship recipients was drawn up.
In time, the endowment amount was raised from $5000 to $10,000.00. At this time, 105 endowments have been placed in over 45 different colleges in New York State. The fields of study have broadened greatly to reflect the additional career choices available to the men and women of today.
